In the summer of 2014, a 41-year-old African American woman named Tracy Martin was reported missing in Gary, Indiana, on June 26th. The search for Tracy came to a grim end on October 19, 2014, when her body was discovered in an abandoned house at 2200 Massachusetts Street in Gary. The breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of Darren Deon Vann, a 43-year-old man from Indiana. Vann was initially apprehended on October 18, 2014, for the murder of 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy, who had been found strangled in a Motel 6 in the neighboring city of Hammond. In a stunning confession, Vann not only admitted to killing Hardy but also claimed responsibility for the deaths of several other women, including Tracy Martin. He agreed to cooperate with law enforcement and led them to the desolate, abandoned properties where he had left his victims. In total, the bodies of six other women were recovered from these locations across Gary, all of whom had been strangled.

In May of 2018, Darren Deon Vann pleaded guilty to the murders of seven women, including Tracy Martin. To avoid the death penalty, he accepted a plea agreement that resulted in seven concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole.
