In the quiet city of Reno, Nevada, the life of William Fredrick Andrews, a 68-year-old White/Caucasian male affectionately known to friends and family as "Bill" or "Uncle Bill," was tragically cut short on August 11, 2024. A beloved figure in his community, Andrews was a veteran of the grocery industry, having dedicated over 45 years to his career, most recently with Scolari's Food Company.
His warm demeanor and infectious smile were so well-known that customers would often wait in longer lines just to be checked out by him. Beyond his work, he was a passionate fan of classic rock music and Harley Davidson motorcycles, and he cherished spending time outdoors and with his beloved dogs.
The circumstances of his death unfolded on a Sunday morning when Reno Police responded to a call on Keystone Avenue around 6:00 a.m. There, they discovered Andrews' body; he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The investigation that followed revealed a grim connection to another case, the disappearance of 48-year-old Patricia Portella-Wright from Kings Beach, California.
Investigators identified Brent Clifford, 55, as the last person seen with Portella-Wright and a person of interest in her disappearance. It was soon discovered that Clifford was also connected to the death of Andrews. Authorities believe Clifford fled the scene of the homicide in Andrews' red 2003 Chevrolet Blazer. This led to a multi-agency investigation spanning across Nevada and California.
A breakthrough in the case came when investigators, following a lead on the stolen vehicle, located and arrested Brent Clifford in Portola, California. Following his arrest, the body of Patricia Portella-Wright was discovered down a steep embankment off Mount Rose Highway in Washoe County, Nevada. Clifford is now a suspect in both homicides and is facing charges including murder and identity theft. While a definitive motive has not been publicly released, the series of events has left two communities in mourning and searching for answers.
