In the early morning hours of August 31, 2017, the city of Reno, Nevada, was rattled by a discovery that would set in motion a lengthy investigation. Vidal Smith, a 26-year-old Black / African American man, was found lying in the roadway at the intersection of 1st Street and Roff Way. When officers arrived at approximately 2:00 a.m., it was apparent that Smith was deceased, having sustained what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
