In the spring of 2015, a life was tragically cut short in Madison, Indiana. Brennan Stewart, a 17-year-old male, died on April 16, 2015, after being fatally shot. The incident that led to his death unfolded around 9 p.m. in the 400 block of West Vaughn Street, sending shockwaves through the community.
On that Thursday evening, a fight broke out between several people. During the altercation, a gun was fired, and Brennan Stewart was struck in the stomach.
He was quickly transported to King's Daughter Hospital in Madison, but tragically, he was pronounced dead. Remembered fondly by those who knew him, his death left a profound void in the lives of his friends and family.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly identified a suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for 31-year-old Vaughn Alan Whitt of Milton, Kentucky. At the time the warrant was issued, Whitt was already being held in the Carrollton County Jail in Kentucky on charges unrelated to the shooting. Law enforcement agencies from both Indiana and Kentucky, including the Indiana State Police, the Kentucky State Police, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, collaborated on the investigation.
Following his arrest, Vaughn Whitt was extradited to Indiana to face charges related to Brennan Stewart's death. In October 2016, a jury found Whitt guilty of murder, two counts of intimidation, four counts of pointing a firearm, and carrying a handgun without a license. His defense claimed the shooting was accidental, but the jury rejected this argument. For his crimes, Vaughn Whitt was sentenced to 55 years for the murder, with an additional 10-year enhancement for the use of a firearm, bringing his total sentence to 65 years.
