In the early morning hours of October 18, 2023, a young man's life was cut tragically short in a shooting outside a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina bar. Starquan Dwayne Washington, a 23-year-old male, was fatally wounded in the incident. Those who knew him remembered 'Star,' as he was often called, as a kind, respectful, and generous person with a big heart and an even bigger smile. He was a loving father to a young son and was known for his cheerful disposition.
Washington was a graduate of Socastee High School and was working to support his child.
The fatal encounter unfolded outside of Barfield's Bar & Grille on Highway 17 Bypass. An altercation that began inside the establishment is believed to have spilled out into the parking lot. In the ensuing violence, both Washington and another individual were shot. Washington was rushed to Grand Strand Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The second victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to recover. The incident sent shockwaves through the community and left his family, particularly his mother, Jamella Washington, devastated.
In the wake of the shooting, Horry County Police swiftly identified a suspect. Kvon Tyrese Lawhorn, a 24-year-old from Myrtle Beach, was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting. In a painful twist, it was revealed that Washington and Lawhorn were friends. The motive for the shooting, despite their friendship, has not been publicly detailed, though it is believed to have stemmed from the initial dispute at the bar.
The community mourned the senseless loss of a young life. Friends and family remembered Washington as a selfless and compassionate individual who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need. His funeral was held on October 27, 2023, at the New Direction Worship Center in Loris, South Carolina, followed by a burial at Popular AME Cemetery. The pallbearers at his service wore red shirts with the poignant message, 'Everybody Ain't Your Friend,' a somber reflection on the circumstances of his death.
