On February 28, 2024, 47-year-old Joseph "Joey" Renee Lane of Carrollton, Georgia, was found deceased near the parking lot of the North Gate at Clifty Falls State Park in Madison, Indiana, with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Authorities arrested 33-year-old John Dean McElwaney of Tallapoosa, Georgia, at the scene, charging him with voluntary manslaughter.
