In the summer of 2014, the life of 28-year-old Eugene Connelly was tragically cut short in a brazen daylight shooting in Philadelphia. On the morning of June 24th, at approximately 9:10 a.m., Connelly was inside his car on Archer Street near Butler when an unknown assailant opened fire, striking him twice in the chest. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
In the immediate aftermath, police reported that they had not established a motive for the shooting and had no leads.
The Connelly family was tragically familiar with such heartbreak. Eugene's death echoed a dark chapter in their family's history, the still-unsolved murder of his great-uncle, George Connelly, in 1968. This painful parallel left the family fearing they would be haunted by another unresolved loss. Eugene, the youngest son of Bishop Barry and Doris Connelly, was remembered as a talented musician who served as the minister of music at his father's church, the Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church in North Philadelphia. Beyond his church involvement, he was pursuing a career as a rapper under the stage name Shane-O.
Raised in a religious household, Eugene’s life also had its share of troubles. The family had moved from Elkins Park to Williamstown, N.J. to steer him away from a rough crowd, only to move back to Philadelphia when similar issues arose. He had a history of drug and firearms-related charges in New Jersey between 2004 and 2009, as well as a DUI charge in Philadelphia in 2012. His family described him as being too trusting of others, a trait they worried might have contributed to his death. Their fears were amplified by a recent incident before his murder; during the previous Easter, someone had shot at his car, shattering a window. When his father pressed him for information about the shooter, Eugene was reluctant to talk, stating he didn't want to be a 'snitch.'
In the wake of Eugene Connelly's murder, the family and police appealed to the public for assistance. A $20,000 reward was offered for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. Despite the belief by his family that there were witnesses to the shooting, the case, much like the murder of his great-uncle decades earlier, has gone cold. There have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the years that have passed since his killing.
