A resident of Gary, Indiana, Deonte was at his home in the 1200 block of Aetna Street when an attempt was made to set the house on fire. Despite the unnerving event, he managed to escape unharmed with his family's dog. This alarming incident, however, was only a prelude to the violence that would later unfold.
Friends and family remember the young Black man as a funny and loving individual, making the day's tragic events all the more difficult to comprehend.
Later that same day, the sense of security at Deonte's home was shattered for a final time. A knock at the door led to a fatal encounter. Multiple individuals entered the residence, and during an altercation, shots were fired. Deonte was struck by the gunfire, and in the end, he was pronounced dead at the scene just before midnight. Another person inside the home was also wounded in the shooting but survived their injuries.
