In the summer of 2015, a tragedy unfolded in Lafayette, Indiana, that cut short the life of 36-year-old Aaron Tyrone Hunter Jr. On August 4th, Hunter and another man, 46-year-old Terry L. Smith Jr., were found dead in a home on Perrin Avenue, both having suffered from gunshot wounds. The incident was quickly ruled a double homicide, prompting an investigation by the Lafayette Police Department.
Within days of the discovery, authorities made their first arrest in connection with the
killings. The investigation continued, and less than a week later, a second man was taken into custody. The two individuals charged in the murders were Matthew Erdal, 34, and Jacob Guffey, 19. The motive behind the violent act was connected to drug-related issues, as revealed during later court proceedings.
In July 2016, Matthew Erdal pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder, as well as a count of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm. His plea was part of an agreement that led to a 55-year prison sentence. During his sentencing, the courtroom was filled with emotion. Erdal’s family spoke of his struggles with drug abuse, which they said led to his involvement in the crime. In a remarkable display of grace, the father of Aaron Hunter Jr. addressed the court, stating that he forgave Erdal for his role in his son's death.
Jacob Guffey was also scheduled for sentencing for his part in the double homicide. Following the sentencing of his co-defendant, he faced the prospect of a lengthy prison term for his involvement in the deaths of Aaron Hunter Jr. and Terry Smith Jr.
