In the late hours of August 22, 2015, a violent altercation that began inside an Indianapolis nightclub tragically spilled out into the streets, claiming the life of 32-year-old Tamara Sword. A mother of five, Sword found herself an unintended victim in a dispute that was not her own. The conflict, reportedly involving two local rappers, escalated and moved to a gas station on Lafayette Road. It was there that gunfire erupted.
Sword, sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle at the station, was struck by a bullet. She was rushed to IU Health Methodist Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led Indianapolis police to identify two suspects: Michael Edwards, then 33, and Kenneth Jones, then 28. In June of 2016, both men were arrested and subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident that led to Sword's death. Another man, Joshua Riggins, was also killed during the chaos at the gas station after being run over by a car attempting to flee the gunfire. Authorities believed the actual targets of the shooting were two other individuals involved in the initial nightclub fight.
Despite the initial arrests and charges, the path to justice for Tamara Sword took a frustrating turn. The case against Michael Edwards and Kenneth Jones ultimately faltered due to significant issues with the evidence presented by the prosecution. Citing problems with the reliability of witness testimonies, the Marion County Prosecutor's office made the decision to dismiss the murder charges against both men. This development left the investigation into Sword's death unresolved, and no one has since been held legally responsible for her killing.
