On May 8, 2016, a journey from Columbus, Ohio, to Missouri took a tragic turn, ending in the death of 33-year-old Mario L. Edwards. Edwards, a male resident of Columbus, was a passenger in a van with three other individuals, traveling along Interstate 70 in Greencastle, Indiana. An argument erupted between Edwards and another passenger, Markus Yeanay, who was seated in the back of the vehicle with him.
The dispute escalated, and Yeanay allegedly shot Edwards twice in the torso.
Following the shooting, the driver of the van proceeded to Putnam County Hospital in Greencastle. There, the driver dropped off the wounded Edwards and another passenger before leaving. Despite medical attention, Mario L. Edwards was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Law enforcement was quick to respond, locating the suspect vehicle shortly after the incident. Two individuals from Columbus, Ohio, were apprehended: 18-year-old Markus Yeanay and 21-year-old Stefon Woods. Yeanay was charged with murder in connection with the shooting. Woods faced charges related to possession of cocaine. The investigation determined that the argument was the primary catalyst for the fatal shooting. An autopsy was conducted to officially confirm the cause of death.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Markus Yeanay was sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in the death of Mario L. Edwards. The case drew the attention of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and the Indiana State Police, who worked collaboratively to bring the suspects to justice and thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to the violent end of a life on a cross-country trip.
