On August 14, 2016, the community of Sauk Village faced a violent tragedy involving the death of 23-year-old Black male Mustafa Carter. The incident unfolded in the south suburban area, a region that neighbors the state line, where gunfire erupted during the afternoon hours. Carter, a resident of the village, was targeted in a shooting that also left two other individuals wounded, marking a chaotic and dangerous scene for local law enforcement and emergency responders who rushed to the location to provide aid.
Severely injured from the attack, Carter was urgently transported across the state border to St. Margaret Health in Dyer, Indiana, in hopes of saving his life.
