In the fall of 2016, the life of a young father was cut short by violence in Gary, Indiana. Samuel E. Lockett, a 22-year-old Black male, was killed by gunfire on October 13, 2016. Born in nearby Hammond on February 8, 1994, Samuel was a resident of Gary where he had attended school and graduated from the Youth Builds Program in 2012. He had briefly worked at a local Popeye's Chicken.
