On May 10, 2022, 29-year-old Devante Brown was shot and killed in the 1700 block of West 5th Avenue. The incident was one of two homicides that occurred in the city on the same day, drawing the attention of local law enforcement and the community.
According to police reports, the fatal encounter began with a disagreement over a seemingly simple
act. Brown was at a gathering when he expressed a desire to hold an infant. When the child's father denied his request, an argument ensued. The verbal confrontation quickly turned violent, and Brown was shot. Emergency services were called to the scene, and he was transported to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
