In the late afternoon of May 31, 2020, a trip to a Gary, Indiana, gas station turned fatal for 22-year-old Dorell Glenn Townsend Jr. Townsend, a male, was inside the convenience store with his girlfriend when a verbal altercation escalated into a deadly shooting. The incident led to the eventual conviction of one man for his murder and a plea deal for another who was present.

Townsend and his girlfriend were at the counter when Terry Horton and his half-brother, Aaron Sawyer IV, entered the store. An exchange of words occurred between Townsend and Horton. Shortly after, as his girlfriend was leaving the store, Sawyer, who had been standing near Horton, pulled out a handgun. He paused as a woman and three children walked by before opening fire on Townsend, shooting him multiple times. Townsend was pronounced dead at the scene, found lying by the front doors of the establishment.
An investigation into the shooting led police to identify Horton from the surveillance video. A tip subsequently helped authorities identify Aaron Sawyer IV as the shooter. Following his arrest, Sawyer claimed he acted in self-defense, believing his and his half-brother's lives were in danger. His defense attorney argued that the then-recent unsolved murder of Sawyer's other brother had put him in a state of heightened paranoia.
Ultimately, a jury found Aaron Sawyer IV guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder conviction, with an additional seven years for a gun enhancement, totaling a 67-year sentence. At his sentencing, Townsend's mother addressed Sawyer, expressing her forgiveness but also her wish for him to take accountability for his actions. Sawyer offered an apology to the victim's mother, stating he was in a 'bad situation' and has to live with the choice he made.
Terry Horton, in exchange for his testimony against his half-brother, pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal. His sentencing was scheduled to take place after Sawyer's trial. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of a seemingly minor dispute escalating into deadly violence, leaving a family grieving and two men facing lengthy prison sentences.
