A domestic dispute spiraled into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 35-year-old Jarius Lewis of Elkhart, Indiana, in October 2016. The events leading to his death began with a physical altercation between his relative, Leon Lewis, and Leon's girlfriend at the Carriage House Apartments.
The conflict escalated when Jarius and Leon Lewis arrived at the apartment complex. An argument ensued between them and the girlfriend's family and friends who were present.
During the confrontation, Leon Lewis reportedly fired a handgun inside the residence. The fight then moved outdoors, where more shots were fired. As Jarius and Leon Lewis attempted to leave in a vehicle, an individual involved in the altercation fired at their car, striking Jarius.
Leon Lewis drove Jarius to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated for life-threatening injuries. He remained on life support for several days before succumbing to his injuries on Sunday, October 23, 2016. An autopsy was scheduled, and the case was officially ruled a homicide investigation.
In the immediate aftermath, police arrested Leon Lewis on charges of domestic battery and criminal recklessness with a firearm in connection with the initial dispute. However, he was not charged with the shooting of Jarius Lewis. Law enforcement officials announced that they had identified a person of interest in Jarius Lewis's murder but did not publicly release the individual's name. At the time, the investigation into the homicide was ongoing, and no arrests had been made directly related to the fatal shooting.
