In the quiet community of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, 68-year-old Lewis 'Lou' Morrison was a familiar and friendly face. A United States Air Force veteran, he had retired after a long career with Sodrel Trucking. He was known for his outgoing personality and his dedication to the American Legion Post 42, where he worked as a bartender and cook, often helping with charitable events like Toys for Tots.
Neighbors described him as the 'friendliest person in the whole neighborhood,' often seen walking his beloved dog, Tiny.
The peaceful life of this father and grandfather came to a violent end on Saturday, November 5, 2016. Morrison was found dead in his home on Vale Hill Drive by his roommate, who had initially responded to a call about a possible break-in. Investigators determined that Morrison had been shot and that his 2014 Ford F-150 truck and several thousand dollars had been stolen from his residence. The initial investigation pointed towards a robbery, with authorities believing a renter may have informed the assailant about cash in the home.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect, James Patrick Duffy, a 25-year-old from Memphis, Indiana. A manhunt ensued, and the following day, Duffy was located hiding under a pool table in a garage. During the pursuit, Duffy had fired at officers but fortunately, no one was hit. His arrest was followed by the apprehension of several others connected to the crime. Todd Duffy, James's father, was accused of tipping off his son that police were nearby. Sandra Duffy and Chelsea Wilson, James Duffy's girlfriend, also faced charges for their roles in hindering the investigation. Authorities stated that the motive behind the robbery and murder was drugs, with the perpetrators seeking money to purchase more.
In January 2019, James Duffy was found guilty of the murder of Lewis Morrison. In addition to the murder conviction, he was also found guilty of robbery and auto theft. In March of that same year, Duffy was sentenced for his crimes. The tragic and untimely death of Lewis Morrison left his family, including his daughter and step-children, as well as the close-knit community of Floyds Knobs, to mourn the loss of a man remembered for his kindness and community spirit.
