Jonquell Golida, a 23-year-old Black male, was killed on the night of November 12, 2016, in the Glen Park section of Gary, Indiana. Around 9:30 p.m., Golida and his friend, Timothy Fryerson, were walking home after purchasing items from a gas station located at the intersection of 49th Avenue and Broadway. While crossing the parking lot, the pair encountered the occupants of a red Dodge Durango.
A verbal altercation ensued, during which Golida reportedly told one of the men he would not fight because the individual appeared intoxicated. As Golida and Fryerson left the premises and walked toward a residence near 49th Avenue and Massachusetts Street, the SUV followed them.
When the vehicle stopped nearby, two gunmen exited the rear doors and opened fire on the men. Golida was struck multiple times, including a fatal wound to the forehead, and was discovered deceased in the middle of the street by responding officers. Fryerson was also shot during the ambush but survived his injuries and was transported to an Illinois hospital for treatment. Investigators at the scene recovered shell casings from two different caliber weapons, indicating multiple shooters were involved.
Police investigation identified the occupants of the Dodge Durango as Nicholas Pelissier, William Galloway, and the driver, Kendall Vaughn. Authorities alleged that Pelissier and Galloway were the individuals who exited the vehicle to shoot at the victims. Vaughn was subsequently charged with assisting a criminal, while his girlfriend, Tammarashea Jones, faced charges of false informing for lying to investigators about the events.
Nicholas Pelissier was convicted of murder and attempted murder for his role in the attack. In February 2018, a judge sentenced him to 85 years in prison, consisting of 55 years for the murder of Golida and a consecutive 30-year term for the attempted murder of Fryerson. William Galloway was also charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the case. While released on electronic monitoring pending trial for Golida's death, Galloway was involved in a separate violent incident in 2019 where he shot a woman and fired at others. He was convicted for that subsequent crime in 2021 and sentenced to 57 years in prison, though legal proceedings regarding his charges in the Golida case remained active as of 2022.
