On the evening of September 2, 2017, police in Hammond, Indiana, were dispatched to a residence on the 7100 block of Osborne Avenue following reports of a shooting. The incident occurred during a social gathering at the home, where several individuals had assembled for a party. Among the attendees was 31-year-old Jonathan Culp, a white male from Highland, Indiana, who had graduated from Highland High School in 2004. As the evening progressed, the gathering took a tragic turn around 9:30 p.m.
when a firearm was discharged inside the residence.
According to witness statements provided to investigators, another attendee named Bryan Carr, a 31-year-old man from Hobart, Indiana, was handling a weapon when he accidentally shot Culp. Immediately following the discharge, witnesses reported that Carr attempted to render aid to the wounded man. However, overcome with distress over the accidental shooting, Carr reportedly told those present that he could not live with his actions. Before police could intervene, Carr turned the weapon on himself and committed suicide.
When the first responding officer arrived at the scene, they heard a gunshot as they pulled up to the property, which was determined to be the self-inflicted shot by Carr. Bryan Carr was pronounced dead at the scene. Jonathan Culp was transported to St. Margaret's Hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Because the shooter took his own life immediately following the incident, there were no arrests, trials, or criminal charges filed in connection with the case.
