On March 13, 2014, the life of 26-year-old Asian male Yueh-Ju Wu came to a violent end following a chaotic home invasion in Hammond, Indiana. Residing in a green house on Magoun Avenue, Wu lived with his pregnant fiancée, Tayanda Davis, and another housemate. Known to sell marijuana from his residence, Wu kept approximately $5,000 in cash in the home, a fact that likely made him a target for robbery.
In the days leading up to the fatal encounter, peculiar activity was observed in the neighborhood; a witness reported seeing a man dressed oddly as an elderly woman, complete with a gown and walker, loitering near Wu's property. This individual was later identified as Akeem Carpenter, who claimed to a suspicious neighbor that he was filming a YouTube video when questioned about his disguise.
On the afternoon of the incident, the atmosphere inside the Magoun Avenue home was initially casual, with several acquaintances—Nicholas Swets, Carlos Cuadrado, and Raul Pacheco—present playing video games. As evening approached, the dynamic shifted abruptly when intruders breached the home. A commotion erupted downstairs, with someone shouting "Hammond PD" in an apparent ruse to confuse the occupants. Wu, skeptical of the claim that police were conducting a raid, retrieved a firearm from his bedroom to investigate the disturbance. As he moved to confront the threat, his acquaintances inside the room scrambled to escape, jumping out of a window and fleeing into the backyard.
Gunfire was exchanged during the confrontation, and Wu sustained fatal injuries. His fiancée, who remained in the bedroom, heard the shots and was subsequently confronted by one of the intruders in the doorway. Although she survived the ordeal, Wu succumbed to his wounds. Police investigation later recovered surveillance footage and witness testimony that linked Akeem Carpenter to the crime scene. A key witness described the shooter’s attire, while others placed Carpenter in the vicinity, dismantling his alibis.
The legal aftermath focused heavily on Carpenter's role in the deadly heist. In 2015, a jury found Akeem Carpenter guilty of murder in the perpetration of a robbery. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Carpenter had cased the home in his eccentric disguise and participated in the armed robbery that led to Wu's death. The court sentenced Carpenter to fifty years in the Department of Correction for his involvement in the crime. While other individuals were present or involved in the periphery of the drug transactions at the house, it was Carpenter who faced the most significant legal consequences for the murder.
