In the early morning hours of September 23, 2017, the life of 26-year-old Dijon Jones, a Black male from Mishawaka, Indiana, was tragically cut short in South Bend. Jones, a father to a young daughter and with another child on the way, was shot in the 1500 block of Lebanon Street. Despite his injuries, he made a desperate attempt to save his own life by trying to drive to a nearby hospital.
His journey for help ended abruptly when he crashed his vehicle near the intersection of Fellows
and Sample Streets. It was there that South Bend Police discovered him, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed that Dijon Jones died from a gunshot wound, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit took charge of the investigation into the shooting. In the immediate aftermath, authorities found that a second individual had also sustained a gunshot wound in the same incident and had managed to get to the hospital for treatment before being released.
Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, investigators have not publicly identified any suspects in the murder of Dijon Jones. No arrests have been made in connection with his death, and the case has remained unsolved. The investigation is considered ongoing as authorities continue to seek leads that could bring a resolution to the case and provide answers for his family.
