On the early morning of Sunday, August 19, 2018, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to a residential neighborhood on the city’s east side following a report of a person shot. Just before 4:15 a.m., first responders arrived at the 6100 block of Nimitz Drive, located northeast of the intersection of 21st Street and Arlington Avenue.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered a male victim inside a vehicle who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel attended to the victim at the scene, but he had already succumbed to his injuries. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Trancito Montenegro. Despite the efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at the location where the car was parked. Homicide detectives and forensic investigators cordoned off the area to collect evidence and interview potential witnesses who might have heard or seen the incident unfold in the quiet overnight hours.
As the investigation commenced, police urged members of the community to come forward with any information regarding the shooting. The case was subsequently listed in databases for unsolved homicides and missing persons in Indiana, indicating that no immediate apprehensions were made. Years after the incident, public records and crime solver lists continued to categorize the death as an unsolved case, with no specific suspects publicly named or arrests reported in connection with the fatal shooting.
