Skylar Maupin, a 21-year-old male, was killed on the evening of January 17, 2019, in Bloomington, Indiana, during a planned drug transaction that escalated into a fatal robbery. A graduate of Seymour High School, Maupin was a student at Ivy Tech in Bloomington at the time of his death.
The incident unfolded at an apartment complex in the 2000 block of North Walnut Street where Maupin and another man had arranged to sell marijuana to two individuals from Fort Wayne, Jamarius Turnage, 25,
and Cleodis Collins Jr., 24. However, Turnage and Collins had decided to rob Maupin and his associate instead. During the course of the robbery, an altercation broke out in a bedroom of the apartment, leading to multiple gunshots being fired. Maupin sustained several gunshot wounds to his torso.
After the initial shooting, Turnage and Collins fled the apartment. Once outside, one of the suspects fired additional rounds into the front window of the apartment, striking the other man in the shoulder. Despite the life-threatening nature of his injuries, the second victim was able to provide police with information that helped identify one of the suspects. Maupin was transported to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The second victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
Following the shooting, Jamarius Turnage and Cleodis Collins Jr. fled north from Bloomington in a red passenger car. They were apprehended a short time later in Martinsville, Indiana, by officers from the Morgan County Sheriff's Department who had been alerted to be on the lookout for the vehicle. A handgun was discovered in the floorboard of their car. Both Turnage and Collins were arrested and subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, and robbery. They were held at the Monroe County Jail.
