In the winter of 2019, the life of 17-year-old Tyler L. Winfrey was tragically cut short in an apartment in Richmond, Indiana. A student in the 12th grade at Richmond High School, he was known for his giant, caring heart and a forgiving nature. He was an active member of his community, involved with the Second Chance Ministries Church and the Jeffers Boys and Girls Club, where he also served as a mentor.
With aspirations of attending culinary school and talk of joining the Armed Forces, his future held bright promise.
On the afternoon of February 18, 2019, those dreams came to an end. Inside an apartment located in the 2100 block of Grand Boulevard, what was described as an accidental shooting occurred. Emergency services were summoned to the scene by a 17-year-old male who reported the incident. He explained to the 911 operator that he had removed the magazine from a gun, believing it to be safe, but the firearm discharged, striking Winfrey.
Following the shooting, the teenage suspect left the apartment and went to another residence a few blocks away to await the arrival of law enforcement. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with reckless homicide in connection with Tyler Winfrey's death. The name of the suspect was not publicly released. The community mourned the loss of a young man known for his love of basketball and his generous spirit, a life ended just a month before his eighteenth birthday.
