In the summer of 2022, a young man named Steven Wade Childress, 25, was fatally wounded in a shooting incident in Anderson, Indiana. The events that led to his death unfolded in the early morning hours of June 19, 2022, at a gathering near the intersection of 16th Street and Madison Avenue.
That night, an altercation broke out, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, Steven Childress was shot. Another man, Landon Hill, was also shot and died at the scene.
Childress was critically injured and immediately transported to a hospital for medical attention. For weeks, he fought for his life, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on August 4, 2022.
The Anderson Police Department launched an investigation into the double shooting. Detectives worked to piece together the sequence of events and identify all individuals involved. After a thorough investigation, the case was presented to the Madison County Prosecutor's Office for review.
Following the review of the evidence and the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the prosecutor's office made the determination that the shootings were acts of self-defense. The investigation concluded that Landon Hill had shot Steven Childress, and in response, another individual, who has not been publicly named, shot Hill. Based on these findings, the prosecutor announced that no criminal charges would be filed in connection with the deaths of either Steven Childress or Landon Hill. The case was subsequently closed, leaving a community to grapple with the loss of two young lives.
