Leandre Lane, a 17-year-old Black male from Indianapolis, Indiana, was a beloved teenager known to his family and friends as 'Lil Dre.' A student who had attended Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter School East and Paramount School of Excellence, he was remembered for his cheerful personality, his love for spiritual dance, and his passion for basketball, often cheering for the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks.
His life was tragically cut short on the afternoon of Sunday, April 7, 2019, during a particularly violent weekend in the city that saw multiple fatal shootings.
Police were called to the far east side of Indianapolis near the intersection of 34th Street and Franklin Road, where they discovered Lane suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports indicated that the shooting may have been a drive-by incident, and his death marked him as one of several victims of gun violence in the area within a short 24-hour period. The community and his family held a vigil to honor his memory, releasing balloons and lighting candles to celebrate the life of a young man who was described as always happy and a 'great kid' who did not deserve such a fate.
