Jon Walter Malk, a 66-year-old male, tragically lost his life in a shooting that occurred on the morning of July 31, 2019, at the Stratford Commons Apartments in Elkhart, Indiana. He was a former resident of Elkhart and was visiting the area on business from his home in Belen, New Mexico.
The incident began to unfold at approximately 9:04 a.m. when police were dispatched to the apartment complex on Oakland Avenue after reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they located a female victim who had sustained a serious gunshot wound to the chest. As law enforcement secured the scene and conducted a thorough search of the building, they made a grim discovery. Three other individuals were found deceased, all having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
The deceased were later identified as Jon Malk, 66-year-old Gail Shields, and 76-year-old Lawrence Faco. The Elkhart County Homicide Unit, which led the investigation, identified Faco as the suspected shooter in the incident. It is believed that Faco was responsible for the deaths of both Malk and Shields, as well as for the injuries inflicted upon the woman who survived.
With the suspected gunman also deceased at the scene, authorities concluded that there was no further threat to the public in connection with this violent event. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting was handled by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit.
