On a Monday afternoon in Eunice, Louisiana, the life of 42-year-old Carl J. Vigers, a male resident of the city, was tragically cut short on March 20, 2023. Vigers was standing outside an apartment complex at the intersection of East Maple Avenue and South Beulah Street when he was struck by gunfire. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The initial stages of the investigation by the Eunice Police Department did not immediately
identify any suspects. However, within a few days, progress was made in the case. Two individuals, 21-year-old Leroy Freeman and a 15-year-old male, were taken into custody. Both were arrested on the charge of being principals to first-degree murder, suggesting their alleged involvement in planning or assisting in the commission of the crime. Despite these arrests, the individual believed to be the actual shooter remained at large at that time.
Further investigation led to the arrest of a third suspect, 17-year-old Demarion Levier. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Vigers' death. Following his arrest, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed that Levier would be tried as an adult. While initial reports after the arrests of Freeman and the juvenile indicated the shooter was still sought, Levier's first-degree murder charge suggests that authorities later identified him as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. The disposition of the cases against Demarion Levier, Leroy Freeman, and the unnamed juvenile, including any trials or convictions, has not been publicly reported.
