In the summer of 2019, the life of 29-year-old Alexis M. Wasson was tragically cut short in Anderson, Indiana. On August 2nd, Wasson, who was pregnant with twins, was shot in the back of the head. She was rushed to a hospital in Indianapolis and placed on life support, but her injuries were ultimately declared unsurvivable. In the days that followed, the twin boys she was carrying also passed away.
Wasson succumbed to her injuries and died on August 10, 2019.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on Wasson's 29-year-old boyfriend, Skye'lar De'andre White. According to police reports, White did not call 911 for help after the shooting. Instead, he drove Wasson and her 5-year-old daughter to his mother's house in the middle of the night. After waking his mother, he asked her to take Wasson to the hospital and then fled the scene on foot. White later claimed to his mother that the shooting was an accident, stating that a gun in the bed had unintentionally discharged and grazed Wasson's head. However, investigators found a spent 9mm shell casing behind the headboard of the bed.
White was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder and criminal recklessness. Following the deaths of the unborn twins, the charges were updated to include two counts of feticide and murder. Madison County prosecutors argued that White's actions following the shooting were inconsistent with his claim of an accident.
Ultimately, Skye'lar White entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and one count of feticide. As a result of the plea deal, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with an additional 10 years to be served on probation. The tragic case left a lasting impact on the Anderson community and highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
