In the winter of 2021, the life of 37-year-old Andrea Aguirre was tragically cut short in her Anderson, Indiana home. On the evening of Tuesday, December 21st, her estranged husband went to check on her and their children at her residence on East 5th Street after she failed to respond to his attempts to contact her. Upon entering the home, he made a harrowing discovery, finding Andrea deceased on her bedroom floor.
Initially, it was believed she had suffered a gunshot wound, but an autopsy later confirmed she died from multiple stab wounds. Tragically, her two young children were in the home at the time of her death but were found unharmed.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify a suspect, 36-year-old Alexander Miranda Ortiz, who was described as Aguirre's boyfriend. A warrant for his arrest on a murder charge was issued. Ortiz had fled Anderson in Aguirre's silver Acura, taking her bank and credit cards with him. His movements were traced through his cell phone data as he traveled to Michigan, then back to Indiana, before heading to Ohio and eventually Massachusetts. During this time, he conducted several internet searches about Andrea's death. On December 29, 2021, Ortiz was located and arrested at a rest stop in Massachusetts, where he was found in Aguirre's vehicle.
Following his arrest, Alexander Miranda Ortiz was charged with murder and fraud. Court documents revealed that Aguirre and Ortiz had been arguing about finances and his alleged infidelity in the days leading up to her death. On the night she was killed, Aguirre had expressed to a friend and her sister that Ortiz was at her house and she did not want him there. The last activity on her cell phone was recorded just after midnight on December 21st, and surveillance footage showed Ortiz leaving her house shortly after. A jury found Ortiz guilty of both murder and fraud. The court noted six aggravating factors and no mitigating factors in his sentencing, ultimately imposing a 65-year sentence for his crimes.
