On the night of October 22, 2019, tragedy struck in Hammond, Indiana, when 23-year-old Quinten Kendrick-Taylor, a male resident, was fatally shot. The incident occurred in the 1300 block of Liberty Court at approximately 11:10 PM. Hammond police officers responded to a call of shots fired and discovered Kendrick-Taylor lying on the ground a short distance from his home.
He had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Quinten Kendrick-Taylor led to the apprehension of three suspects on April 2, 2020. The arrests were the result of a collaborative effort between the Hammond Police Department and the U.S. Marshal's Great Lakes Regional Task Force. Two of the individuals were taken into custody in East Chicago, while the third was apprehended in Indianapolis. On March 27, 2020, the Lake County Prosecutor's Office filed murder charges against all three individuals.
The three individuals charged in connection with the murder were identified as Kian Moore, Christian Buchanan-Purdiman, and Leila Shojaee. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Moore was identified as the principal shooter and, in February 2024, received a 58-year prison sentence for his role in the crime. His co-defendants, Buchanan-Purdiman, who was the driver, and his girlfriend, Shojaee, both entered into plea agreements for their involvement in the incident.
During his trial, Moore's defense contended that the prosecution could not definitively prove who fired the fatal shot. However, the court applied the principle of accomplice liability, which holds all participants in a crime equally responsible. This was a critical factor in securing Moore's conviction. Later, in November 2024, the Indiana Court of Appeals denied Moore's attempt to have his conviction overturned, affirming the use of accomplice liability in his case.
