In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Gary, Indiana, the life of 21-year-old Damarius Carr, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On October 22, 2019, Carr was shot near the intersection of 12th Avenue and Johnson Street. He was quickly transported to Methodist Northlake Hospital, but the gunshot wounds proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m.
The Lake County Coroner's Office later confirmed that his death was a homicide resulting from the shooting.
Damarius was a young father, known for the love he had for his three children, Damarius Jr., Kymariana, and Kyrie. Having attended Roosevelt High School and later earning his GED, he was remembered by his family and friends as a cherished member of his community. His sudden and violent death left a significant void in the lives of his loved ones, particularly his mother, Sharice, and the mother of his children, Akeeah. He was preceded in death by his father.
In the wake of the shooting, the Gary Metro Homicide Unit, along with the Lake County CSI and the Gary Police Department, launched an investigation into Carr's death. Despite their continued efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the homicide, no information regarding any potential suspects or arrests has been made public.
