On the morning of November 4, 2019, police in Indianapolis, Indiana, were dispatched to a residence on the city's east side following reports of a violent domestic disturbance. Officers arrived just before 7:00 a.m. at a home located in the 2600 block of Kay Ellen Drive, a neighborhood situated near the intersection of 25th Street and North Post Road.
Upon entering the property, first responders discovered the body of Gary Bryant, a 27-year-old Black male, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The investigation led by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather the culmination of an escalating interpersonal conflict. Witnesses and residents present inside the home at the time of the incident reported to detectives that Bryant had broken into the residence with the intent to attack his ex-girlfriend. According to the accounts provided to law enforcement, Bryant forced his way into the house and attempted to kill the woman, at which point he was shot by another occupant of the home during the struggle.
