In the late afternoon of a November Sunday in Flat Rock, Indiana, a domestic turmoil reached a tragic and irreversible conclusion, ending the life of 24-year-old Dominick Michael Eugene Nick Drake. According to Ricky Drake's account to the
authorities, the situation inside their residence on County Road 1000S had escalated to a perilous point. He stated that Dominick had threatened him with both a knife and a large whiskey bottle. Feeling that his life was in jeopardy, Ricky Drake said he fired a single shot from a. 45-caliber handgun, striking Dominick in the chest. When deputies and emergency responders from the Flat Rock and Shelbyville Fire Departments arrived at the scene, they were unable to find any signs of life. The Shelby County Coroner's Office subsequently pronounced Dominick Drake deceased at the residence.
The nature of the relationship between the two men became a point of confusion in the immediate aftermath.
