On a summer evening in Speedway, Indiana, the life of 18-year-old Jayshawn Jamal Walker was tragically cut short. On June 20, 2020, officers from the Speedway Police Department were dispatched to The Legend at Speedway Apartments in the 2200 block of Sumter Street following a 911 call around 10:30 p.m. reporting a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the young male suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators began to piece together the events of that night and determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence; they believed Jayshawn was specifically targeted. Their investigation led them to believe that Walker was initially shot on White Oaks Drive. Despite his injuries, he managed to make his way to his own apartment on Sumter Street before he ultimately succumbed to the fatal wound. The Marion County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound.
In the weeks that followed Jayshawn Walker's death, law enforcement pursued leads that eventually pointed to a suspect. Their investigation led them to San Bernardino, California, where 20-year-old Ruben Gonzalez Magallanes was apprehended. Magallanes was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Walker's death. While an arrest was made, the Speedway Police Department emphasized that the investigation remained ongoing and encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.
