On August 21, 2020, a Black, 20-year-old male named Kevin Antoine Richey Jr. was fatally shot on the near-northwest side of Indianapolis, Indiana. The incident took place in the afternoon within the 900 block of Edgemont Avenue, a residential area located west of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 1:35 p.m. following reports of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, authorities discovered Richey suffering from injuries but initially found him to be awake and breathing.
According to accounts provided by his mother, Chrystal Gray, the shooting appeared to be a case of mistaken identity. She stated that her son attempted to reason with the assailant in the moments before the gunfire, reportedly pleading that he was not the intended target with the words, 'That's not me, that ain't me bro.' Despite these protestations, the individual proceeded to pull the trigger. Richey was subsequently transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his wounds. The Marion County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the case a homicide.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, local detectives launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the slaying. Community members were urged to contact homicide detectives or Crime Stoppers with any relevant information. As of the latest available reports concerning the case, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder. The victim's mother publicly expressed her grief and called for an end to the violence in her community, emphasizing the senseless nature of the crime that cut short the life of a young man remembered by former educators as a resilient and hardworking individual.
