In the early morning hours of October 30, 2020, 18-year-old Rashaad Germany Jr., an African-American male, was found shot to death in a yard on North Ashland Avenue in Indianapolis. Known to his loved ones as 'Deuce,' he had recently graduated from Ben Davis High School and had dreams of attending culinary arts school, inspired by his father's cooking. Rashaad, who had autism, was described by his father as a 'big teddy bear' who would not have intentionally provoked anyone.
He was a homebody who enjoyed playing video games.
The investigation into his death revealed a tragic story of deception. Detectives discovered that Rashaad had been lured outside of his grandmother's home through messages on Instagram. A classmate of Rashaad's, Nichale Johnson, who was 17 at the time, had used a girl's social media account to communicate with Rashaad and arrange a meeting. Investigators found that Johnson had contacted multiple people to use their social media profiles to entice Rashaad. The final messages were exchanged just before the fatal shooting. In a police interview, Johnson admitted that he wanted to find Rashaad's address to fight him.
For nearly four years, Rashaad's family pleaded for answers and justice. A breakthrough in the case came in the spring of 2024. On April 3, 2024, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office issued an arrest warrant for Nichale Johnson. On April 15, 2024, Johnson was arrested by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and charged with murder.
Following a three-day trial, a jury convicted Nichale Johnson of murder in the death of Rashaad Germany Jr. The evidence presented showed the calculated efforts Johnson undertook to lure Rashaad to his death. The conviction brought a sense of relief to Rashaad's grieving family, who had endured years of uncertainty. Johnson's sentencing was scheduled for December 5, 2025.
