On August 21, 2017, the Indianapolis community was shaken by the violent death of 19-year-old Black male Andre Simms. The incident occurred late that Monday evening in the 10000 block of East 42nd Street, specifically near a residence on Ellis Drive on the far east side of the city. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the scene around 11:00 p.m. following reports of a person shot.
