In Evansville, Indiana, on March 14, 2021, the life of 23-year-old Keshon Leigh Hensley was tragically cut short. Officers responded to a call about a person down in the 2200 block of Sunburst Avenue and found Hensley deceased, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. He was discovered lying on the ground in his Woodland Park apartment.
For nearly a year, the case remained under investigation.
Then, in March 2022, Evansville Police announced a significant development, charging 36-year-old Jerrme Cartwright with the murder of Hensley. At the time the warrant was served, Cartwright was already incarcerated at the Vanderburgh County Jail on an unrelated charge.
The investigation into Hensley's death uncovered key details that pointed to Cartwright as the suspect. A witness came forward and told police that Cartwright had confessed to the shooting, stating, 'it was either me or him.' This same witness revealed that Cartwright claimed to have dismantled the murder weapon and scattered its pieces across Evansville. Further evidence was reportedly found on Cartwright's phone, where he was allegedly recorded discussing the murder.
In connection with the firearm used in the homicide, another individual, Shannon Dumas, was arrested in December 2021. Dumas was charged with purchasing the gun that was used to kill Hensley and later reporting it as stolen. The trial for Jerrme Cartwright, the man accused of pulling the trigger, was later rescheduled to February of the following year.
