On the evening of March 23, 2021, the life of 38-year-old Joshua Gonzales, a Hispanic male, was cut short inside a home in New Albany, Indiana. New Albany Police Department officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 100 block of Cherry Street around 6:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Gonzales deceased, having sustained at least one gunshot wound.
The incident was quickly determined to be a homicide, but authorities assured the public there was no ongoing danger as all individuals involved had been identified.
The investigation revealed the tragic event stemmed from a drug transaction that turned violent. Gonzales had reportedly arranged to purchase methamphetamine from 17-year-old Vance L. Martin. An argument broke out between the two during the exchange. According to Martin's account to the police, Gonzales became angry, drew a handgun, and demanded Martin hand over a gun, money, and the drugs. In response, Martin produced his own firearm and fired multiple shots at Gonzales, leading to his death at the scene.
The day after the shooting, Vance L. Martin was arrested and charged with murder. As the case proceeded through the legal system, Martin eventually accepted a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. In exchange for his plea, additional charges related to firearm and methamphetamine possession were dismissed. A judge sentenced Martin to 17 years in prison, with 16 of those years to be served in the Indiana Department of Correction, followed by one year of probation.
