On what was supposed to be a routine Sunday afternoon, a young family's outing turned into a tragedy that would forever alter their lives. Dusty Shane Lawrence, a 30-year-old male from Anderson, Indiana, ventured to Indianapolis on March 28, 2021, with his pregnant wife, Betsy, and their five-year-old daughter, Madisyn. The purpose of their trip was to meet a potential buyer for some items Dusty had listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace, a transaction that should have been simple and straightforward.
Their destination was the 3700 block of Rinehall Drive on the far east side of Indianapolis. Upon their arrival, Dusty exited his vehicle to meet with the individuals who had responded to his online advertisement. Within moments, the meeting escalated into a violent encounter, and Dusty was shot at least once in front of his horrified family, who were still inside the car. Though he was alive when law enforcement arrived, he later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Neither his wife nor his daughter were physically harmed in the attack.
The investigation into Dusty's murder led to the arrests of two teenagers. More than nine months after the fatal shooting, two underage suspects were taken into custody in connection with the case. Prosecutors charged Tremayne Hobson Jr. and Demetrius Coakley, both of Indianapolis, with murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. The investigation revealed that the suspects had planned to trade a different, damaged gun for the items Dusty was selling.
In a subsequent court case, a jury found Tremayne Hobson Jr. guilty on charges of murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. He was sentenced to 52 years in prison, to be followed by three years on work release. His accomplice, Demetrius Coakley, accepted a plea agreement for his role in the deadly robbery. The tragic case prompted law enforcement to remind the public of the potential dangers of online marketplace transactions and to encourage the use of designated safe exchange zones.
