In the early morning hours of January 19, 2025, the life of 25-year-old Chyon Andre Crabtree, an African American male, was cut short in a fatal shooting on the near northeast side of Indianapolis. Officers were dispatched to a residence on Holloway Avenue just before 3:30 a.m. following a report of an unresponsive person. Upon their arrival, they discovered Crabtree inside the home, having sustained at least one gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crabtree's life appears to have been foreshadowed by events that transpired a day earlier. Investigators have been looking into his connection to a shots-fired incident that occurred on the far east side of Indianapolis. In that earlier event, Crabtree and an 18-year-old male were reportedly seen fleeing from an apartment complex in Cumberland where shots had been fired. The teenager with Crabtree had suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound to the head. Authorities at that scene recovered multiple firearms, shell casings, ski masks, money, and drugs. While it remains unclear if they were involved in a robbery attempt, Crabtree was questioned by police and subsequently released.
Following his release, Crabtree returned to the Holloway Avenue residence. A witness stated that Crabtree admitted to being in some trouble earlier and had a forehead injury from his interaction with law enforcement. Later that night, gunfire was heard outside the home. Despite his injuries, Crabtree reportedly refused medical attention. His condition deteriorated over the next few hours, and by the time emergency services were called, he had succumbed to his injuries.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's homicide detectives are actively investigating the circumstances that led to Crabtree's death. They found multiple shell casings outside the house, corroborating the witness's account of gunfire. It was also reported that police had been called to the same location earlier in the night for a 'shots fired' run but had not found any evidence at that time. As of now, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the homicide of Chyon Andre Crabtree. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the final 24 hours of his life to determine who was responsible for his death.
