In the early morning hours of September 21, 2017, in downtown Indianapolis, a dispute that began inside a bar tragically escalated on the street, ending the life of 34-year-old Johnny Woods. The male victim was fatally shot in what became the city's 100th homicide of that year.
The events leading to the shooting reportedly started with an argument between Woods and another man, identified as Richard Williams, inside a local bar.
This altercation spilled outside, where the violence reached its peak. Witnesses reported that Williams shot Woods, who then fell to the ground and managed to fire a shot back at Williams. Dashcam footage from a nearby vehicle captured the chaotic moments of the gunfire, recording a single shot followed by a rapid succession of ten more. In the immediate aftermath, bystanders rushed to aid the dying victim.
The investigation into Woods' death led police to Richard Williams, who had appeared at a hospital later that same night with a gunshot wound to his leg. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Johnny Woods. In March 2020, Richard Williams was convicted for the shooting and sentenced to serve 58 years in prison for his role in the death of Johnny Woods.
