In the early morning hours of July 26, 2021, the life of 43-year-old Sean Nailer, a male resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded at the Sherbrook Apartments, located along Stop 11 Road, during a weekend marked by a surge of violence in the city. Emergency medical technicians were dispatched to the scene just before 3 a.m. following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they were met by a shirtless man, later identified as Jeremy Etheridge.
Etheridge, the sole resident of the apartment where the incident occurred, initially claimed that Nailer had been struck by bullets that had come through the walls of the apartment. Sean Nailer was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead.
Investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department began to piece together the events of that fatal morning. A search of Etheridge's apartment uncovered a Taurus 9mm handgun and four spent bullet casings, suggesting the shooting had occurred within the residence. Despite Etheridge's initial statement pointing the finger at a mutual friend as the perpetrator, the evidence gathered at the scene began to tell a different story, and suspicion soon fell upon him.
The investigation led to a warrant for Jeremy Etheridge's arrest, but he had fled the state. The search for Etheridge concluded on February 11, 2022, when he was located and apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Union City, Tennessee. He was found in the company of another fugitive who was wanted on unrelated charges. Following his extradition to Indianapolis, the legal proceedings against him commenced. On June 24, 2024, Jeremy Etheridge pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter under 'sudden heat.' As a result of his plea, the initial murder charge was dismissed, and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by two years of probation.
