In the early morning hours of July 29, 2021, the life of 22-year-old Lelan-Eric W. Sharp, a male from North Vernon, Indiana, was cut tragically short. Sharp was discovered in a vehicle in Seymour, Indiana, suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. A woman who had been flagged down by the driver of the car made the urgent 911 call that brought law enforcement to the scene.
Rushed first to Schneck Medical Center, he was then transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation that followed uncovered that the shooting had not occurred in the car but rather inside a residence in the 8000 block of North County Road 925E in Seymour during what was described as a domestic dispute. This discovery led police to their primary suspect, 34-year-old Jeremiah Christopher Oliger of Seymour. Oliger was subsequently arrested and faced several charges, including murder, reckless homicide, obstruction of justice, and unlawful possession of a handgun by a violent felon.
Ultimately, the charge of murder was dismissed, and Oliger pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. In a courtroom filled with the emotional testimony of Sharp's family, who spoke of the devastating impact his 'careless' death had on their lives, Oliger was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The judge also mandated that he undergo a drug and alcohol treatment program during his incarceration.
