In the late afternoon of September 24, 2021, a grim discovery was made on the near northeast side of Indianapolis. Solomon Stewart Keets Jr., a 41-year-old Black/African American man, was found inside a vehicle in the 3500 block of Kinnear Avenue, having been fatally shot. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call around 4 p.m.
and pronounced him dead at the scene.
The death of Keets was part of a particularly violent weekend in the city, which saw a total of five homicides in just 48 hours. This string of violence prompted calls from community leaders for significant reforms to the criminal justice system and for greater cooperation between the public and law enforcement to curb the rising homicide rate.
