In the early morning hours of June 17, 2022, a sense of unease settled over the 2300 block of Stuart Street in Indianapolis. Just after 1:30 a.m., the sound of a gunshot shattered the quiet, prompting a call to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Officers arrived within minutes to a home on the near northeast side, a neighborhood unfortunately familiar with such violence. Inside, they discovered 41-year-old Ervin Crabtree Sr. suffering from a gunshot wound.
A child was also found in the home at the time of the shooting but was thankfully unharmed.
Paramedics rushed Crabtree to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation into his death left detectives with few leads, and for a year, the case remained unsolved, leaving a family to grieve without answers. The shooting marked the fifth homicide in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood that year, a somber statistic for a community actively working to overcome its struggles with crime through revitalization efforts.
After a year of persistent investigation, homicide detectives identified a possible suspect in Crabtree's death. In July 2023, authorities announced the arrest of 20-year-old Jerry Poge in connection with the robbery and murder of Ervin Crabtree. At the time of his arrest for the murder, Poge was already in custody for an unrelated incident. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Poge with felony murder and robbery, bringing a measure of hope for justice to Crabtree's loved ones.
