On the night of December 19, 2018, police officers on the northeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana, were alerted to gunfire just before midnight. Law enforcement officials, who were already in the vicinity of the 3100 block of North Riley Avenue near East 32nd Street and Emerson Avenue, responded rapidly to the sound of shots fired. Upon arriving at the scene, investigators discovered a vehicle containing two unresponsive individuals who had sustained critical injuries.
The victims were
identified as 25-year-old Johnny Coleman, a Black male, and Charles Lemon, also 25 years of age. Both men were found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response of emergency personnel, they were pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner’s Office. The incident was classified as a double homicide, adding to a string of violent crimes that had affected the city throughout that year.
In the years following the shooting, detectives struggled to identify a motive or any individuals responsible for the killings. Public records and reports from crime solving organizations indicate that the investigation yielded no named suspects, and no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Coleman and Lemon. The case has remained unsolved, with authorities unable to determine who fired the fatal shots into the vehicle that winter night.
