In the winter of 2021, the life of 21-year-old Sara Ivy-June Gilbert was tragically cut short in her Bloomington, Indiana, apartment. On December 22, friends of the young woman, unable to reach her, went to check on her at her residence on Rolling Ridge Way. What they discovered was a scene of profound loss; both Sara and 22-year-old Cameron Black were found deceased, each having sustained gunshot wounds.
Authorities investigating the devastating event quickly determined the case to be a
murder-suicide. Evidence found at the scene, including a Glock 9mm handgun located near Black's body, led investigators to conclude the tragic sequence of events. The investigation revealed that Gilbert and Black had been in a relationship that was experiencing significant turmoil. In fact, Sara had moved out of the apartment they shared just the day before the fatal incident occurred. For reasons that may never be fully known, she had returned to the apartment.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department concluded their investigation without seeking any further suspects, and consequently, no arrests were made in connection with the case. The incident was a stark reminder of the potential for domestic disputes to escalate to violence. Those who knew Sara remembered her as a kind and compassionate person who had a passion for cosmetology and harbored aspirations of becoming a social worker to assist the homeless community. Her untimely death sent ripples of grief through her family, friends, and the wider Bloomington community.
