In the quiet city of Bloomington, Indiana, a grim discovery was made on September 6, 2020, shattering the peace of a tranquil neighborhood. Emma Mumper, a 26-year-old female, was found deceased in her family home in what was determined to be a tragic murder-suicide. She, along with her mother, Annamarie Greta Mumper, 54, and her brother, Jakob Mumper, 18, were victims of a horrific act perpetrated by their father, Jeffrey Mumper, 61, who then took his own life.
The tragic events came to light when a friend of Emma's arrived at the residence on South Olcott Boulevard to pick her up. After receiving no answer to her knocks and calls for about 45 minutes, the friend used a key to enter the home. Inside, she made the harrowing discovery of Emma's body in her bedroom and immediately called 911. When Bloomington police officers responded to the welfare check, they found a devastating scene, with four deceased individuals, all with gunshot wounds.
Subsequent investigation by the Monroe County Coroner's Office confirmed that Emma, her mother, and her brother all died from gunshot wounds to the head, and their deaths were ruled homicides. The coroner determined that Jeffrey Mumper also died from a gunshot wound to the head, but his death was ruled a suicide. Evidence found at the scene led investigators to conclude that Jeffrey Mumper had shot and killed his wife and two children before turning the gun on himself. The bodies of Annamarie Greta and Jakob were found in their respective bedrooms, while Jeffrey's body was discovered in the bathroom.
At the time of her death, Emma Mumper was a promising doctoral student in clinical psychology at Stony Brook University in New York and had graduated from Indiana University Bloomington. Her brother, Jakob, was an elite swimmer at Bloomington North High School, and her mother was reportedly working towards becoming a teacher. Friends of the family mentioned that Jeffrey Mumper had previously battled prostate cancer and was at the time fighting pancreatic cancer. However, law enforcement officials did not release an official motive for the killings. As the perpetrator was also deceased, the investigation concluded without any arrests, and the case was classified as a murder-suicide.
